Atrix 2 to Android Ice Cream

AT&T Mobility announced that Motorola Atrix 2 owners may now update their device to run Google’s Android 4.0, a.k.a. Ice Cream Sandwich.

According to AT&T, Android Ice Cream Sandwich brings new features including a revamped browser with improved page loading, tabbed browsing, offline reading and desktop mode, as well as lock/unlock capabilities enabling consumers to unlock directly to the camera, text messaging, phone dialer or homescreen. The Atrix 2 also boasts Face Unlock, which leverages the device’s front-facing camera so subscribers can secure their phones using facial recognition technology, and the new People app, which brings together a large profile picture, phone number and status updates in one location.

AT&T subscribers can update their Atrix 2 via Wi-Fi by going to Settings > About phone > System updates.

The Atrix 2 is the latest in a series of AT&T devices upgraded to Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The operator previously pushed the update to products including the HTC Vivid, Pantech Burst, Sony Xperia ion and Samsung Galaxy Exhilarate.

Google’s Android Developers dashboard reveals that Ice Cream Sandwich now powers 23.7 percent of all Android devices. Android 2.3, known as Gingerbread–which Google first released in late 2010–powers 55.8 percent of devices.
